Deer Damage of Ornamental Plants
Costly browsing damage may be reduced or eliminated by planting less preferred species of by using susceptible plants in areas protected from deer.
Whether or not a particular plant species will be eaten by deer depends on the deer's previous experience, food needs, plant palatability, seasonal factors, weather conditions and the availability of alternative foods.
In general, the winter period, which brings snow cover and thus reduced food availability, is the time when most damage takes place.  Rather than face starvation deer will eat even the most resistant plants.

Drought: Some grasses are idea for flooding or drought conditions. Canada Bluegrass, Idaho bentgrass or redtop, Though not as aesthetically please, can work well in areas where there's poor drainage or standing water, for dry conditions, try these top performing turf types.
  • Sheep Fescue
  • Hard Fescue
  • Tall Fesue
  • Kentucky Bluegrass

Salt: Salt Tolerance is key For grasses that are exposed to deicing salts along roadways or sidewalks. they're also ideal for coping with highsodium irrigation water, recycled water and naturally salty soils. Fults alkaligrass is considered the most salt tolerated grass
  • Red Grass
  • Perennial Ryegrass
  • Creeping bendgrass
  • Rough Bluegrass
Different turf grasses thrive in various conditions. Selecting the right type of turf grass depends on a number of factors, including the lawn's intented use, whatever irrigation system will be in included and the amount of shade available.

Nitrogen fertilizers are best applied with a rotary style spreader rather than a drop spreader.  The fertilizer should be applied in two directions each perpendicular to the other.  This will help ensure proper product overlap and minimize green streaking, often visible as the classic zebra – striped lawn.  Additionally, care should be taken so that fertilizer nutrients are not applied to areas that do not contain plants.  Fertilizer particles falling onto impervious surfaces like sidewalks or driveways should be swept or blown back into the turf so that nutrients do not enter sensitive waterways via the storm sewer drains.  Lastly, avoid fertilizer applications near surface waters like ponds and streams keeping a 5 to 10 foot buffer strip between the fertilized area and the surface water.
